Somebody Say Something! - by Regina Funkhouser

Why Diversity Matters to your Board
There is a correlation between mission, strategy, board composition and understanding that establishing an inclusive organization begins with establishing a diverse and inclusive board. Boards require diversity to ensure independent thought.

A homogeneous board can result in near-sightedness and group think. Having different people, with different viewpoints, is part of ensuring good governance and having the ability to look at issues from all angles. Diversity is more than just flesh color – Boards require diversity in all areas:  economic background, skill sets, education, AND race.

Boards should reflect the community they serve (you can define community by your clients, your geography, etc.)  Jackson County’s racial makeup is approximately 7% African American/Black, 1% Asian, 88% Caucasian, and 3% Latino.  Twenty-four percent of Jackson County residents are between the ages of 20 – 34. Females comprise 49% of our population and males comprise 51%.  In the city, these numbers change to 20% African American/Black, 0% Asian, 75% Caucasian, and 5% Latino, 52% female, 48% male and 22% are between the ages of 20 -34. Read More

Don't Get Buried in Grant's Tomb - Pansophy for Nonprofits by Diane

Get your grant writing questions answered here! Diane McDonald, Education & Training Director, will be fielding the
tough questions you've been asking.
Share your grant writing struggles and successes with us and each month she
will post your comments, suggestions, or answer your questions on how NOT to get buried in grant’s tomb!
diane@nonprofnetwork.org.

This month's topic:
Great Partnerships, Key to Funding

As sources of federal and state funding for nonprofit organizations shrink, and competition for dollars increases,
grantwriters often ask, “How do I make my application stand out from the crowd?” My advice; work on building a
relationship with a potential funder, especially if an opportunity exists in your own back yard.
Funders want to know
that they are making a lasting impact with their grant awards; it is important that you build trust and communicate
your programs with enthusiasm and integrity. Make an effort to build a lasting partnership.
I came across this brief posting at a site called White Courtesy Telephone. In it, Albert lists five great ways to build relationships with funders and shares tips to help you move your relationship from transactional to transformational.
