Wild Apricot blog.... and link to free training video.

If your nonprofit’s plan for online outreach includes a discussion forum – this one's for you.

The first of three training videos produced to guide the volunteer moderators who helped run the British Columbia Library Association's 2009 Teen Reading Club, Moderating Forums is jam-packed with down-to-earth advice and guidelines for creating, nurturing and moderating a successful online community.  Whether you’re new to forum moderation or an old hand at it, this video is 8:51 minutes well invested.

    http://nonprofitorgs.wordpress.com/2010/04/24/four-reasons-why-nonprofits-should-reconsider-facebook/

    Link takes you to nonprofitech.org.

    1) Nonprofits have been advertising Facebook for free to untold millions for years, and Facebook has yet to return the favor.

    2) Nonprofits are consistently kept in the dark and left guessing when it comes to Facebook upgrades and changes in the toolset.

    3) Facebook ROI is often overrated.

    4) Facebook frequently makes shady decisions when it comes to Internet ethics.

10 Social Media Metrics for Nonprofit Organizations (and How To Track Them): http://bit.ly/9i91aG

“A survey of 200 charity and foundation professionals revealed that nonprofits are finding it difficult to determine how valuable social media tools are for their organizations. Seventy-nine percent said they hadn’t found ways to do so.” – Chronicle of Philanthropy, November 12, 2009

For those 79% of nonprofits out there, I have listed 10 social media metrics below that can be easily tracked and plotted on a Social Media Return on Investment (ROI) Spreadsheet. If you are using social media correctly, then your numbers should rise from month-to-month.

    http://speckyboy.com/2010/03/19/12-must-have-free-downloadable-web-design-books/

There are a multitude of books (whether in digital format or print) that cover every possible aspect of web design, each one is unique and offers a personalized opportunity for the author to both educate, inspire, and guide the reader through there knowledge.
In this post rather than offer all of my favorite web design books, I have listed 12 books that I have either downloaded and read (or at least scanned through), or I have bookmarked with the whole-hearted intention of eventually reading it (Ruby Best Practices), and the best thing of all? All of these books are completely FREE, in digital format anyway (PDF or HTML).

    The bottom line

Nonprofits need to "tell the truth about their financial situation in order to even think through what the right strategies are for their future," Alnes says.

In particular, she says, nonprofits need to pay attention to their cash position.

So nonprofits should create a cash-flow forecast for at least a year into the future, looking at "each and every source of revenue" and conservatively estimating what is likely to happen with each of them, she says.

Miller says nonprofits typically have responded to the economic downturn by generating profit-and-loss statements and cash-flow projections, reports she says nonprofits should be preparing each month.

And those numbers should reflect "the actual, the real revenue," she says.

"You should be making sure your numbers are good and you are looking them straight in the eye," she says. "If you don't have the windshield cleared, you're going to drive into a tree."

Abuse of Charitable Organizations and Deductions

The IRS continues to observe the misuse of tax-exempt organizations. Abuse includes arrangements to improperly shield income or assets from taxation and attempts by donors to maintain control over donated assets or income from donated property. The IRS also continues to investigate various schemes involving the donation of non-cash assets, including easements on property, closely-held corporate stock and real property. Often, the donations are highly overvalued or the organization receiving the donation promises that the donor can purchase the items back at a later date at a price the donor sets. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 imposed increased penalties for inaccurate appraisals and new definitions of qualified appraisals and qualified appraisers for taxpayers claiming charitable contributions.
